Transformers 1-4 Ranked & Reviewed in 4K UHD Explosion-Filled Glory (Review)

Paramount has released all of the blockbuster Transformers films on 4K UHD as of December 5, 2017. Filled with eye-popping action and stunning visuals, these films deliver the kind of entertainment experience that absolutely engulfs you.  Watching them on 4K UHD quite literally transforms home viewing into something more immersive and more visceral than ever before.

Paramount has re-released the first four Transformers flicks in glorious 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time this week and these movies were MADE to be seen in this format. With every subsequent release in this franchise, the special effects improved and the chaos was also ramped up, making for some people’s perception of the onscreen robotic frenzy to be a confusing mess. In 4K UHD, the image is so crisp and clear, that the chaos is not only easier to follow but it looks astounding. Like the Transformers films or not, they are some of the best looking movies ever made — writing be damned. I’ve ranked the Blu-rays in order of explosion-filled awesome-ness. * Bonus – The covers are all bad-ass.

#4. TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN

3-DISC 4K UHD / BLU-RAY COMBO PACK W/DIGITAL COPY

The worst Transformers film in terms of writing also comes with some of the best special features in any of the four releases. So even though the movie wasn’t all that great, the film looks gorgeous and sounds spectacular in 4K — with an entire Blu-ray disc jampacked with a ton of goodies including my personal favs: A Day with Bay: Tokyo and 25 Years of Transformers.

Special Features:

4K

  • Commentary by Michael Bay, Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman

Blu-ray (Disc 1)

  • Commentary by Michael Bay, Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman

Blu-ray (Disc 2)

  • The Human Factor:  Exacting Revenge of the Fallen
  • A Day with Bay: Tokyo
  • 25 Years of Transformers
  • NEST: Transformer Data Hub
  • Deconstructing Visual Bayhem with commentary by pre-vis supervisor Steve Yamamoto (multi-angle)
  • Deleted/Alternate Scenes
  • Easter Eggs
  • The AllSpark Experiment
  • Giant Effing Movie
  • Linkin Park – New Divide
  • The Matrix of Marketing

#3. TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION

3-DISC 4K UHD / BLU-RAY COMBO PACK W/DIGITAL COPY

For the longest time I had considered the fourth Transformers movie to be the worst but after revisiting the re-release in 4K — I found myself enjoying it far more the second time around. The movie just looks so damn hot and the action is straight fire. Mark Wahlberg may have sucked and the film rushed the Dinobots stuff to death, but Age of Extinction is far better than I remembered it from theaters.

Special Features (only on Blu-ray Disc 2):

  • Bay on Action
  • Evolution within Extinction The Making of TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION
  • Just Another Giant Effin’ Movie
  • A Spark of Design
  • T.J. Miller: Farm Hippie

#2. TRANSFORMERS

3-DISC 4K UHD / BLU-RAY COMBO PACK W/DIGITAL COPY

The first and only critical darling (if you can call it that) of the Transformers franchise is stacked with the most special features of any re-release, so if you don’t own this movie yet (but why???) then immediately seek out the 4K UHD re-release. The film may look the least impressive of all 5 flicks, but it still looks pretty as hell in this format. There’s a reason why they spent hundreds of millions making these movies — they were made to be seen in the clearest, most refined format possible — and this is it.

Special Features:

4K

  • Commentary by Director Michael Bay

Blu-ray (Disc 1)

  • Commentary by Director Michael Bay
  • Transformers H.U.D. (Heads Up Display)

Blu-ray (Disc 2)

  • Our World
    • The Story Sparks
    • Human Allies
    • I Fight Giant Robots
    • Battleground
  • Their World
    • Rise of the Robots
    • Autobots Roll Out
    • Decepticons Strike
    • Inside the AllSpark
    • Transformers Tech Inspector
  • More Than Meets The Eye
    • From Script to Sand: The Skorponok Desert Attack
    • Concepts
  • Easter Eggs

#1. TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON

3-DISC 4K UHD / BLU-RAY COMBO PACK W/DIGITAL COPY

transformers 3 4k

The best Transformers movie of the series (including the most recent release) is wait for it…. shocking reveal incoming…. F***ing stunning in 4K. I’ve seen Dark of The Moon several times and this will be the third time I’ve owned a copy (first DVD, then Blu-ray) and now this monster… The destruction of Chicago never sounded and looked so real… Seeing people get vaporised by Decepticons may have been disturbing before, but in 4K you can really see the skeleton dust pop.

Special Features (only on Blu-ray Disc 2):

  • Above and Beyond: Exploring Dark of the Moon
  • Uncharted Territory: NASA’s Future Then and Now
  • Deconstructing Chicago: Multi-Angle Sequences
  • The Art of Cybertron
  • The Dark of the Moon Archive
  • The Matrix of Marketing
