Seriously – who keeps voting Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey?!?! I’m with Jimmy Kimmel – take that award away and give it to someone who shows up. I realize he’s joking, but… He does have a point doesn’t he? Here are my thoughts and the complete winners list from this year’s 2016 Emmy Awards.
Game of Thrones is now the two-time consecutive supreme champ, after cleaning house and winning the most awards yet again WITH TWELVE for it’s fantastic sixth season (also the best season mind you). The 68th Annual Emmy Awards were not the most riveting, considering the main names I heard time and time again were either GoT, Veep (screw you Veep – let someone else win for once – and really, who is still voting for you? It’s beyond unfair at this point) and The People V. OJ Simpson. Hilarious that Cuba didn’t win an award but nearly every other single random person from the series did. Take that Radio.
The broadcast was extremely boring – not for the fault of it’s host Jimmy Kimmel who was hilarious and in his closing comments dropped a “Hit em’ with The Hein!” bomb. As Howard Stern fans no doubt know – this was a stunning victory in it’s own. I don’t expect you to understand, and that’s OK. I laughed my ass off and it honestly made up for much of the boring bullshit I had to sit through beforehand. Matt Damon walking on-stage to eat an apple and talk shit to Kimmel who had just lost his nominated category was probably the funniest segment of the broadcast as well.
I’m happy that Rami Malek won the best leading actor category for the stunning Mr. Robot. Fun fact – he’s the first minority actor in 18 years to win that statue. Game of Thrones dominating the major categories, as well as the technicals (obviously) is fitting and I’m happy that they gave it to HBO again considering this latest season was so damn good. That show now has 38 Emmys in total. THIRTY-EIGHT over six seasons (60 episodes). It deserves them all.
