Amazon has announced that it has greenlit an animated TV series based on the Image Comics/Skybound comic series Invincible from creators Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker. Simon Racioppa (Teen Titans), Justin and Chris Copeland (Avengers Assemble) will serve as showrunner and directors respectively.
In addition to the Universal live-action feature length film that is currently in development, Amazon will drop eight hour-long animated episodes (season 1 — with plans for more depending how well it does) based on the greatest superhero comic ever made – Invincible. The comic recently came to a close this year after a 15 year run and 144+ issues. “To know our characters will live on in multiple iterations in other media is almost too exciting to bear! What Amazon is allowing us to do in animated form is nothing short of ground-breaking, and I can’t wait for our rabid fan base to experience it!” said Kirkman.
Amazon’s head of scripted programming, Sharon Yguado promises the show will “look like nothing else on television”. Fans of the series know that it is loaded with shocking story twists, incredible action and features the very best super-powered brawls in the history of the comic medium.
