TOP 5 COMICS TO BUY – 01/06/16: ARCHIE, INTERCEPTOR & SAINTS

After an exhausting holiday season it is about time to relax with a new pile of comics. Sure, you may be like me and still have a stack of comics that haven’t been read from last week, but here is a list of new titles I will be picking up at my local comic shop.

Like many I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. So here are 5 titles worth looking into this week, and a couple honorary mentions for those that have some extra cash since you haven’t blown your 2016 comic budget yet.

Archie #5 – $3.99

Mark Waid, Veronica Fish, Andre Szymanowicz, Jen Vaughn, Jack Morelli

One of my top comic picks of 2015 returns, and has Archies two best friends joining forces to make sure the new girl Veronica doesn’t steal him away. Veronica Lodge isn’t the only new Veronica to Riverdale, as Veronica Fish joins Mark Waid as the new artist of the Archie team.

Interceptor #1 – $3.99

Donny Cates, Dylan Burnett

Typically I wouldn’t be extremely interested in a comic about vampires, but when you have the creative team of Donny Cates and Dylan Burnett at the helm it is worth giving a try. The cover art is really what drew my attention to this book, the splashes of fluorescent colours over the dark space-y skies is really appealing. Additionally, Interceptor is one of the first comics of 2016 being published by Heavy Metal, with Grant Morrison as editor-in-chief, which can only mean good things for comic readers. Oh, did I forget to mention this book already has a film deal in the works, so read up before it hits theatres.

Paper Girls #4 – $2.99

Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang

Paper Girls managed to be my top pick for best comic of 2015. With only 3 issues this book was completely captivating and left me wanting more. What a delight that the first New Comic Book Day of the year included the release of my most anticipated ongoing title. Do yourself a favour and start reading this book.

Saints #4 – $2.99

Sean Lewis, Ben Mackey

One of my favorite new series last year, though it couldn’t crack the my top 10 list, this book is one that I think has a huge potential for 2016. The Saints regroup after their little battle, and continue their expedition. But where are they headed? Ben Mackey provides stunning artwork for this series that sound be receiving more recognition.

Star Wars #14 – $3.99

Jason Aaron, Mike Deodato, Mark Brooks

Are you seeing a trend here? It seems like publishers took note of my top 2015 picks and released a bunch of those books in the first week of 2016. Jason Aaron has done a fantastic job providing those additional Star Wars stories for both die hard fans and comic readers. Gracing this issue if Chewbacca as he faces the infamous Wookie bounty hunter Black Krrsantan.

Extra pulls: Batman & Robin Eternal #14, Bitch Planet #6, Amazing Spider-Man #6, The Vision #3, Weirdworld #2
