Watchmen Trailer Teases Modern-Day Sequel to The Legendary Comic Series?

Watchmen is an upcoming HBO series from creator Damon Lindelof starring Regina King, Don Johnson, Jeremy Irons, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Louis Gossett Jr. The series is set to debut Fall, 2019.

Created by Damon Lindelof, Watchmen is a modern-day reimagining of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ groundbreaking graphic novel about masked vigilantes. Starring Academy Award-winner Regina King, Don Johnson, Jeremy Irons, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Louis Gossett Jr.

HBO has debuted the first official teaser trailer for their upcoming TV series Watchmen and I’m CONFUSED. Various reveals from the series have hinted that the series would potentially be a sequel to the events of the original comic, which has been adapted to film before in glorious fashion by director Zack Snyder. There has not been an official sequel to the original and iconic 1980’s Watchmen comic series although some characters have recently made their way into the regular DC universe after the Doomsday Clock event series.

I didn’t really want another Watchmen remake because the film is damn great on its own but after seeing this bizarre preview, it looks as though the series is indeed a sequel to what many fans consider the greatest superhero comic ever created. Actor Jeremy Irons has been confirmed to be playing Ozymandias, and we get a glimpse of him here in the teaser, but he’s much older than he would have been in the comics. In Snyder’s film he was portrayed by Matthew Goode and SPOILER ALERT – he was sort of the ‘villain’ in the series, unless you think like Thanos and are aiming for that greater good using extreme methods. Or you know – maybe this series is actually just a complete re-imagining of the source material to the point where it no longer resembles anything about the comic it is based on aside from some minor details and inspiration. If that is the case – I don’t like it. I really do hope that this is a sequel to the original story and that we are seeing the aftermath of the masked vigilante Rorschach’s journal being read by the masses since that was the hero’s final ‘F U’ to Ozymandias. It would explain all them masks wouldn’t it?

Aside from the Rorschach masks and clock ticking, there is NOTHING that screams Watchmen to me from this preview. However, I will admit that it looks strange and fascinating… I like Damon Lindelof’s work and I’ll watch almost anything with Don Johnson in it, so count me in this Fall no matter what we find out. I have to know more about this show and I really do hope someone just clarifies what the Hell is happening so my inner comic nerd can chill the F out.
