Garret Dillahunt & HBO Confirm Talks of Deadwood Revival as a Feature Film

Deadwood was an HBO original series created by David Milch that took place in iconic town of the same name and starred Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Brad Dourif, Garret Dillahunt, Molly Parker, John Hawkes, Paula Malcomson, Dayton Callie and more. It ran for three seasons before being abruptly cancelled despite mass critical acclaim.

After executing his last act of justice as a Montana Marshall, Seth Bullock relocates to a gold-mining camp known as Deadwood, where he and partner Sol Star look to start a hardware business. Bullock soon crosses paths with another new arrival – legendary gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok – and clashes with the formidable boss of the Gem Saloon and occasional deal broker, Al Swearengen.

Like most of you reading this you probably watched Deadwood after it was already well…. dead. Running for three seasons, the HBO series was an astounding work of art and likely the finest Western show ever created. Ian McShane’s performance as the foul mouthed Al Swearengen will go down as one of the most memorable roles in television history.  But — the show was cancelled after three seasons and it was canned in the middle of a cliffhanger. New characters showed up near the end of the final season, brilliant storylines were set up for a fourth season that never happened and awesome enough — there was zero resolution to be found for pretty much every single character. It was heart-breaking. I knew it was canned before I watched it, but I still went in anyway and was just as crushed.

There have been talks off and on of David Milch reviving Deadwood as a film sequel or two in order to complete unfinished business, but the last time it had been brought up was in 2011 and ever since it’s been considered toast as more time passes by. Until now.

“So uh….I’m hearing credible rumors about a #Deadwood movie. Come on HBO, You made the ‘Entourage’ movie. Give the #Deadwood fans some closure.” – tweeted actor Garret Dillahunt.

That’s how it started – and according to an HBO executive, “very preliminary discussions” have been made in actually pulling this off. Don’t get too excited…We’ve been burned before. However — wouldn’t it be awesome if Dillahunt came back to play a third character on the show? He’s already done two very memorable ones, so if this does happen — let’s go for the hat trick.
